United Palace
United Palace, Washington Heights
The spectacular United Palace, located at 4140 Broadway in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, is an Individual Landmark designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The theatre was originally constructed as one of the five Loew’s Wonder Theatres throughout the New York City metropolitan area. Thomas W. Lamb, a renowned theatre architect of the 20th century, design this extravagantly detailed terra cotta work as one of his “last great palaces”. The exotic terra cotta ornamentation is a premier example of “Indo-Persian” design. KTA was honored to provide stabilization and restoration services at the building. Scope included replacement of selected decorative terra cotta cornice units, patching and reglazing salvageable terra cotta units wherever possible along with brick replacement, mortar repointing, and steel repairs.
The next phase of work at this building will involve a conditions survey to restore the main roof.
